GET A CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR. NOW!

Public Service Announcement:

Two friends and I said ברכת הגומל, the "thank you God for saving me from deadly situations" blessing, on Shabbos morning because at 2am Shabbos night the carbon monoxide detector went off. When the fire department arrived with their portable detector tools, they said that the level of CO (which cannot be seen or smelled) in the apartment (of the one who the other friend and i were staying by) had already reached such a level that we would have been dead in 8 hours or less. We would have just gone to sleep and never woken up for shul in the morning.

I am heading out to buy a carbon monoxide detector for my apartment. YOU NEED TO GET ONE TOO. If you already have one, make sure it's working properly.

I'm glad you're allright.

Today they're obligatory in all new constructions. At least here in Rockland, but I think it's a NY law and exists in many other states too.

Oyeah, to keep windows open overnight.... a must - yet even I skip that great minhag (greatset thing about it my wife hates it!) when the A/C is on...

Maybe we should stop being so spoiled...

No idea if you can even get them here. What can cause CO build-up? Does everybody need one?

Steg,
b"H you and everyone are alright! We had a carbon monoxide scare a while ago and since then we have monitors throughout the house.

Good for everyone that already has one, and thanks to everyone for the well-wishes.

Opening windows definitely helps; after shutting off the air conditioner that was causing it, and opening all the windows, the CO dissipated in a few minutes.

Simon:

you can find all kinds of info about carbon monoxide on the internet, but in short, things burning can cause it. what seemed to happen in this case was something in the wiring of an air conditioner and/or the surge protector it was plugged into.

Glad you're all right, and thanks for the email alert. We have them, and we'll make sure others do as well.

Now if we could only get all shuls to install AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators). Ours has saved a few lives at my shul.

"Two friends and I"?! Not "me and two friends"?

Shame, shame.
