Agriprocessors (Rubashkin's) Boycott!
The Jewish Week —
Pressure Seen Mounting Against Kosher Meat Giant
Interesting how they focus on the "Liberal" Modern Orthodox and the Conservative worlds. I can see why the Hhareidim wouldn't be involved in protesting, boycotting, or "anti-supporting" Agriprocessors — but where're the Reform? The Reconstructionists? The Renewalists? I'd think they'd be all up on this thing. Etho-kashrut is going to be the next big thing after Eco-kashrut!
Makes some nice (but divisive? i hope not) publicity for the International Rabbinic Fellowship, Uri L'Tzedek, and Yeshivat Chovevei Torah, though.
And to the rav whose name is the first two words of the article, I give you a berakha — if the poo must hit something, may it hit the fan and not hit you!
The Jerusalem Post —
Agriprocessors announces new CEO
This article focuses on the Agriprocessors business side of the equation. It also mentions Uri L'Tzedek, based in New York, as well as two voices from the Mid-Atlantic — R' Shmuel Herzfeld of The National Synagogue in Washington DC (where i actually spent Shabbos ‘Erev Pesahh this year), as well as the Star-K in nearby Baltimore.

About time. Rubashkins has been mentioned much in the news for several years. But I cannot remember any favourable mention.
As Rabbi Herman said, 'where there's smoke.....'.
BS"D
The changes at AgriProcessors are a scam encouraged by the OU so they can continue to certify the meat if top company officials are indicted , which seems likely at this point. Sholom Rubashkin will still be with the company, and his faterh Aaron will still own it. Until the Rubashkins sell the company and ownership passes on to others with clean hands, the boycott should only intensify. They have had 3-1/2 years to do teshuva since the first scandal made headlines.
Comments from the Reform movement would be greeted with cries of "Who cares? They don't eat kosher anyway." I'm not sure what percentage of the Reconstructionists keep kosher - but I'd be suprised if it was significantly more than the Conservatives, 30% of whom keep kosher in the house IIRC.
Correct. If the Reform movement is not interested in encouraging people to keep kosher, then there's no reason they would expect people to be buying Rubashkin's in the first place-- treife meat is cheaper.
And if the Reform movement is interested in getting people to keep kosher, it would be suicide to tell people to stop eating Rubashkin's-- they would just eat treife meat, instead.
Not to step on anybody's toes, but I sincerely doubt that reform or reconstructionist have a firm grasp on kosher in the first place.
Some do keep obvious treif out of their house. But an ignorance of shechita allows a lot to enter anyway.
A few limit themselves to fish and poultry - fish irrespective of snapper ve kaskeses, poultry as long as it has a plumbum.
Shtrenge kashrus is just NOT an operating concept for many.
Consequently, 'Rubashkin' is not a name much bandied about outside of the more orthodox olam.
'Fraid that the only food restrictions that impact 'reform-recon-renew' in any way are vegetarioth and veganoth. They're much more likely to be tsimchonim than shomerim.

Larry Lennhoff & Mar Gavriel:
Good points about the Reform and Reconstructionists, i didn't think of that seemingly obvious angle. Although i wonder if BZ would object based on his understanding of Reform Judaism.
There is now also a grassroots effort among kosher consumers to rally popular support behind (i) a boycott of AgriProcessors' meat, (ii) the removal of Menachem Genack from the head of the OU kashrut division which has completely dropped the ball here (where were the mashgichim??) and (iii) pressure on all kosher certification agencies to adopt rules requiring humane treatment of animals and employees as a precondition to giving kosher certification for any products.
